2073 Rule 5 Draft Roundup
« on: December 21, 2016, 01:07:40 PM »
December 21, 2073 (AP) - It's that most exciting time of the year right now. Snow is on the ground, school is letting out for the winter and teams in the OTBA are rushing to select the finest unprotected gems from each others' systems. Yes, it's the pinnacle event of the year, the Rule 5 draft!

For the first time in league history, it was broadcast in primetime and in sold-out stadiums throughout the world. Expert commentators breathlessly discussed the myriad of potential for each pick.  Shouts and stunned silence followed each pick as one team was full of jubilation, convinced it had picked the key piece to the next championship run while the fans of the losing team mourned their loss of relevance in the league for future.

Here's a summary of each pick:

#1 by the New Jersey River Rats - 3B B.J. Fox (taken from Puerto Rico).  The former international amateur was cruelly plucked from hometown team but expects to see his first real extended opportunity in the OTBA. The 27-year old has been described as having some character issues but is a versatile defender, extremely fast and should hit enough to play the entire infield. He might be a bit old to put together a Hall of Fame career at this point.
IMPACT: Game-changer!

#3 by Puerto Rico - SS Benjamin Lawrence (taken from Orlando). After seeing their future hometown hero franchise player taken from them, Puerto Rico wasted no time in responding by selecting a young potential superstar.  The former second round pick offers a bit more with the bat and middle infield skills at the cost of a weaker arm. His new manager expects him to play him all over the field due to his versatility.
IMPACT: Game-changer!

#9 by Washington Potomacs - 1B Antonio Souza (taken from Stockholm). The legendary Stockholm franchise surely made a colossal mistake in leaving this middle of the order bat unprotected. Souza is 23, left-handed and has shown 20+ HR power in the minors. He is also the reigning AA Outstanding Hitter. The Potomacs can count on him to anchor the team for many years. Unlike the first two picks, Souza is young enough to put together a definitive Hall of Fame career.
IMPACT: Game-changer!

#20 by Stockholm - CF Preston Bavin (taken from Jacksonville). Fortunately, Stockholm pulls even in the talent win-loss column with this pick. It might seem a bit daft to pick a player that hasn't played above short A but Stockholm saw the potential in this player. His glove and speed should be the best in the game and scouts see untapped potential in his offense. It is a big jump in competition from short A to the majors but Bavin should prove to be a force to be reckoned with for a decade. Also could be a Hall of Famer.
IMPACT: Game-changer!

#29 by Washington - SP Henry Wood (taken from Cheddar Bay). Now it is clear that the commish is on the up-and-up as there's no way he'd let a talented veteran arm leave his system. Henry Wood is 31 but scouts believe he may have his best years ahead of him. Versatile enough to start or be a dominating force out of the bullpen with his beguiling forkball, the crafty lefty Wood should be a welcome addition to the team.
IMPACT: Game-changer!

With that, the Rule 5 draft concluded for this season, leaving fans hungry and impatiently counting the days to next year's dramatic and spectacular event.

WINNER: Washington
GOOD EFFORT: New Jersey
PARTICIPATION RIBBON: Puerto Rico, Stockholm
FRANCHISE RUINED FOREVER: Orlando, Jacksonville, Cheddar Bay

I would posit that Cheddar Bay has been in varying states of ruination since 2022.

Also, I actually had to look Wood up.  Turns out he signed a minor-league contract with the Biscuits just three weeks before the Rule 5 draft.  Hope he didn't sign a lease on an apartment!
